Check out these simple methods for treating and removing stains that start with the letters S through Z.
Shoe Polish
Remove excess shoe polish from the fabric, being careful not to grind it in further. Pretreat with a paste of powdered detergent and water. Launder as usual.
Soda
Soak the stain in cool water for 30 minutes. Pretreat it with a stain remover and launder as usual.
Tar
Scrape tar residue from the fabric and place the stain face-down on paper towel. Sponge at it with cleaning fluid, and replace the paper towels frequently. Launder the fabric in the hottest possible water.
Tobacco
Dampen the stain and rub it with bar soap, such as Ivory. Rinse it until the water runs clear. Soak the stain in a product that contains enzymes, and launder as usual.
Wine
Sponge the stain with cool water, then soak it in cool water for 30 minutes. Pretreat it with a prewash stain remover and launder as usual. If it’s safe for the fabric, use chlorine bleach.
Wood Stain
Place the stain face-down on paper towel. Pour one cap of acetone on the stain, and dip a clean rag in acetone to blot the stain. Press the stain into the paper towel.
If the wood stain is oil-based, place it face-down on paper towel and use the same process with mineral spirits.
Rinse, then launder the fabric as usual.
