If you know what you’re doing, you can remove household stains easily – but the key is making sure you’re using the right stain remover products and handling the stain properly.

Maple Syrup

Remove excess syrup. Flush with cool or warm water from the back of the stain. Pretreat the spot with liquid laundry detergent and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well, then launder as usual. If the stain is still there after washing, don’t put it in the dryer – you’ll set the stain. Instead, treat it again.

Mud

Brush off as much dried mud as possible. Mix powdered detergent and water into a paste, or use a liquid laundry detergent, to pretreat the stain.

Mustard

Flush under cold water to loosen the stain. Pretreat it with a prewash stain remover, and use chlorine bleach to launder as normal (if bleach is safe for the fabric the spot is on).

Nail Polish

Use nail polish remover unless the stain is on an acetate or triacetate fabric. Place the stain face-down on clean paper towels and apply remover to the back of the stain. Replace the paper towels frequently, and repeat until the stain disappears. Rinse and launder normally, but remember that sometimes nail polish won’t come out of fabric.

Paint

For water-based paint: Rinse the fabric in warm water while the stain is still wet. Once it dries, it won’t come out.

For oil-based paint or varnish: Use a paint thinner or turpentine, if it’s safe for the fabric. Rinse and pre-treat the stain with stain remover, laundry detergent or bar soap. Rinse and launder as usual.

Perfume

Pretreat with a stain remover or a liquid laundry detergent and launder as normal.
