Removing stains can be a lot easier than it seems if you know what you’re doing. Check out these common household stains and what to do about them.

Egg

Pretreat by soaking the egg stain in a product that contains enzymes for at least 30 minutes. Launder as usual.

Fabric Softener

Dampen the stain and rub it with bar soap, such as Ivory. Rinse it out, then launder as usual.

Grass

Pretreat by soaking the grass stain in a product that contains enzymes. If the stain sticks after you launder it normally, use sodium hypochlorite bleach or oxygen bleach.

Grease or Oil

Pretreat with a prewash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent. Launder it using the hottest water possible. If the stain is heavy, place the stain face-down on clean paper towel and apply cleaning fluid to the back of the stain. Replace the paper towels beneath the stain often, then let it dry and rinse it clean. Launder as normal.

Ink

Some types of ink are impossible to remove. However, you can try by placing the stain face-down on clean paper towels, then squirting rubbing alcohol on the back of the stain. Replace the paper towels frequently, then launder as normal.

Ketchup

Don’t dab ketchup – you’ll spread the stain. Instead, remove excess ketchup with a spoon or knife; don’t rub it into the fabric. Run cold water through the stain from the back side.
