The Ultimate Stain Removal List: Stains A Through D

Household stains are part of life – but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. This is the ultimate stain removal list, and you can bookmark it and refer to it any time something spills, drips or drizzles at home.

The Ultimate Stain Removal List, Stains A Through D

Baby Formula

Pretreat the stain using a product that contains enzymes; soak it for at least 30 minutes. Launder as usual.

Barbecue Sauce

Flush the stain with cold water; pretreat it with liquid laundry detergent by scrubbing gently over the stain with a soft brush. Rinse it well and repeat. When color stops lifting from the stain, switch to white vinegar. Then, pretreat it with a prewash stain remover and launder.

Blood

If the stain is fresh, soak it in cold water and launder as usual. If the stain is dry, soak it in warm water with a product that contains enzymes and launder as usual. You can also cover the stain in a baking soda – water paste before laundering.

Coffee, Tea, Wine and Other Drinks

Soak the stain in cool water, then pretreat with a product that contains enzymes. Launder with oxygen bleach (Like OxiClean™).

Gum

Apply ice or cold water to harden the surface, then scrape it with a dull knife. Saturate the area with a pre-wash stain remover, then rinse thoroughly.

Candle Wax

Scrape the surface with a dull knife. Place the stain between two clean paper towels and press it with a warm iron, and replace the paper towels each time they absorb wax. Be careful not to transfer the stains to another part of the fabric. Place the stain face-down on clean paper towel and sponge it with a prewash stain remover, blotting it with paper towels to absorb coloring and wax. Let it dry, then launder as usual.

Chocolate

Scrape off excess chocolate. Soak the fabric in cool water, and pretreat it with a prewash stain remover. Launder it in the hottest water possible.

Cosmetics

Pretreat the cosmetic stain with prewash stain remover or a paste of powdered detergent and water. You can also rub it with bar soap. Then, launder the fabric as you normally would.

Crayon

Scrape the surface with a dull knife. Place the stain between two clean paper towels and press it with a warm iron, and replace the paper towels each time they absorb wax. Be careful not to transfer the stains to another part of the fabric. Place the stain face-down on clean paper towel and sponge it with a prewash stain remover, blotting it with paper towels to absorb coloring and wax. Let it dry, then launder as usual.

Dye Transfer

Use a prepackaged color remover according to its instructions. If you don’t have a color remover, use hypochlorite bleach or oxygen bleach, then launder.
