For most people, keeping things neat as a pin isn’t something that comes naturally – but if you use these three tips, it’ll be a lot easier.
- Do a “surface purge”
- Do something with your boxes
- Arrange what’s left
#1. Surface Purge
Go through one room and get rid of visible clutter by putting it all in a box. Everything that looks like it doesn’t belong or that crowds the space belongs in a box. (If you find trash, like old paperwork you no longer need, skip the box – put it right in the waste bin.) At this point, don’t bother going into cupboards or drawers. You just need to focus on what’s on the surface.
#2. Boxes
Go through everything you put into boxes during the surface purge. Separate the items by category – things you want to keep, things you want to sell, things you want to donate and things you just want to throw away.
Put away everything you want to keep, and take care of the rest accordingly.
#3: Arrange
When you’ve done a surface purge, you should have more space available. If things still look crowded, that means you need to do another surface purge. Arrange the things that made it through Purge 1 and Purge 2 so they look neat.
