When you’re moving out, you have to cover the basics plus a few extra areas that most people forget. Here’s a basic move-out cleaning checklist:
- Dust everything
- Clean kitchen appliances
- Empty and clean cabinets
- Clean sinks and countertops
- Scrub showers, tubs and toilets
- Clean all floors
Many people choose to hire a professional cleaning service to tackle the bigger stuff – but even if you do it yourself, these are 10 can’t miss spots when you’re all packed up and ready to go.
#1: Dust ceiling fixtures. Don’t forget to wipe down the fans, check corners for cobwebs, and remove and clean out light fixtures. (While you’re at it, get wall-mounted light fixtures, too.)
#2: Squeegee the windows so they’re completely spotless. Use professional-grade cleaning supplies so you don’t leave streaks behind.
#3: Clean the baseboards. This goes for the kitchen and the bathrooms, and it requires you to reach up beneath the cabinetry to make sure there isn’t any dust (or worse, cobwebs) taking up residence there.
#4: Scour the tubs to make sure there’s no soap scum left behind. Clean the grout using professional-grade cleaners, too, to make it look like new.
#5: Clean the oven by removing racks, drip pans and burners. Use eco-friendly but tough cleaning supplies (check out our recipe for baking soda paste below).
#6: Wash cabinet faces in every room. Make sure you check the hinges for gunk, and clean the handles, as well.
#7: Remove liners from drawers (especially in the bathroom) and make sure they’re completely cleaned. Run a vacuum attachment in them first, if there’s a lot of small debris, to save yourself some effort when it comes to washing.
#8: Clean the floors around the washer and dryer. Lint and little pieces of pocket litter can fall behind and beneath the washer and dryer, so make sure you move them out to clean properly.
#9: Vacuum out and scrub the exhaust fans. When moisture is high and fans are running, dust can become gooey – but it’s easy to remove with a degreaser.
#10: Sweep the garage for dirt, spider webs and cobwebs.
How to Make Eco-Friendly Oven Cleaner
Here’s what you need:
- Water
- Baking soda
- Washcloth
- Vinegar
- Small bowl
- Spray bottle
Remove all the racks from the oven and soak them in hot water and vinegar.
Mix three tablespoons of baking soda with a bowl of water to create a paste you can spread on dirty oven surfaces. Spread the paste everywhere – it’ll turn brown, but don’t worry. Let it sit for 12 hours (or more, if it’s heavily soiled). Wipe it clean with a wet washcloth the next day. If you still see baking soda residue (you will), spritz it with a mixture of one part vinegar, three parts water and wipe it away with a wet cloth.
