If you’re like most people, clutter kind-of sneaks up on you – before you know it, there’s more clutter than you know what to do with. However, these three simple steps can help you declutter any room in the house.

When it’s time to declutter your space, start small. Use these four steps to minimize the “extras” in your house and clear out all the clutter in no time.

You need three boxes labeled this way:

• Trash
• Donate/Sell
• Put Away

#1. Start on the Surface

Reward yourself with instant results by starting with a quick surface cleaning. Put away, trash or donate surface clutter first. Look for:

• Papers you don’t need
• Broken items
• Old magazines

#2. Dive Deeper

Divide each space into sections. It might help you to divide each room into four parts, not counting closets. Start with the section that’s least cluttered and begin filling your boxes. Ask yourself if you’ve used an item within the last year – and if you haven’t, it’s probably time for it to find a new home.

Then ask yourself, for each item:

• Do I want to keep cleaning this?
• Does this item still suit my style?
• Does holding this item bring more happy memories than a photo of it would bring?
• Does this really have a place in my home?

If you say no to two of those questions, think about putting the item in the Trash or Donate/Sell box. If a box fills up before you’re finished with the room, get another box – don’t stop to put things away before you’ve decluttered an entire room.

#3. Handle the Boxes

When one room is finished, deal with what’s in the boxes. If you have items in the Donate/Sell box, figure out whether the items are worth selling – and whether you’re willing to hold a yard sale or sell your items online. If you decide to donate the items, take them out to your car so they’re out of the house.

Put away the items you’re keeping that didn’t belong in the original room, and dump the trash box in the garbage bin.
