If you’re like most people, you know that creating menu plans can slash your stress levels, makes prep much easier, and even saves you money – but where do you start?
Here’s what you need to know.
How to Make a Menu Plan
Planning menus by the week can save you money, time and effort – and you’ll end up eating better because you’re not making last-minute decisions. Follow these steps to create great menu plans for yourself and your family:
- Create a list of recipes you know and can create
- Sort the recipes based on protein, and choose seven
- Create your grocery list based on what you already have
Create a List of Recipes
While it’s great to try new recipes, now’s not the best time for that. Stick to tried-and-true recipes you know you can pull off as you create your first week’s menu plan. You want to make sure that your family already likes what you’re cooking. You can also ask them for input – that way, they’ll be happier with the final outcome.
Sort Your Recipes and Pick Seven
Sort your recipes by protein so you can alternate.
Choose seven varied recipes. If you can avoid making the same protein twice in a row, do! That way, your family won’t get tired of one thing or another.
Create a Grocery List
Go through the fridge and figure out what you already have, and make your grocery list based on everything you’ll need for the whole week. If you’re short on something, put it on your list – but don’t be afraid to substitute, either; if you have a recipe that needs a pound of ground beef but you already have a pound of ground turkey, work with it.
Pro Tip: Once you’ve created two or three weekly menu plans, start rotating them. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel every week!
